President Rodrigo Roa Duterte embarks on his third visit to Japan as he is set to deliver a keynote address during the second day of the 25th International Conference on the Future of Asia in Tokyo, Japan on May 31, 2019.
Under the theme, ‘Seeking a New Global Order – Overcoming the Chaos,’ the two-day conference convenes Heads of States, government leaders, business executives, and academics from the Asia-Pacific region to discuss and share their respective opinions and evaluations on the regional issues and the role of Asia to the world.
Gathering and featuring eminent Asian leaders annually since 1995, the Nikkei-led conference is considered as one of Asia’s top foreign policy in economic fora and has earned a reputation as one of the most important conferences in Asia.
Prior to his participation to the conference, President Duterte is scheduled to witness the signing of agreements in business and tourism between the Philippines and Japan.
The Chief Executive is also set to meet with the Filipino community in Japan. According to His Excellency Jose C. Laurel V, Philippine Ambassador to Japan, there are approximately 285,000 Filipinos living in Japan who are working in various fields such as engineering and banking.
Moreover, the President shall convene with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in a bilateral meeting to strengthen strategic partnership between the Philippines and Japan in various areas of mutually beneficial cooperation. According to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Office of Asia and Pacific Affairs (ASPAC) Assistant Secretary Meynardo Montealegre, this will be the 7th meeting between the two leaders since November 2018 at the sidelines of the 33rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit held in Singapore.
