President Rodrigo Roa Duterte embarks on a visit to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea to participate in the 26th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM) on November 17-18, 2018.

This is the first time that Papua New Guinea is hosting the APEC Summit since its membership on November 1993.

Working on this year’s theme of ‘Harnessing Inclusive Opportunities, Embracing the Digital Future,’ the 21 Heads of State/Government of the APEC Member Economies shall discuss on building common ground on trade to ensure growth, job creation, and better quality of life across the Asia-Pacific region.

APEC’s 21 Member Economies include Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russian Federation, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, United States of America, and Vietnam.

This is the third APEC participation of President Duterte since being elected as the Philippines’ 16th President. His trip to Papua New Guinea also marks as the first visit of a Philippine Chief Executive.

Prior to his engagements at the AELM, the President is set to meet with about a thousand members of the Filipino community at the Filipino Association of Papua New Guinea (FAPNG) Clubhouse, a property owned by the Filipino community that symbolizes their unity.

To date, there are about 40,000 Filipinos working and residing in Papua New Guinea.
