President Rodrigo Roa Duterte embarks on a journey to Bali, Indonesia to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders’ Gathering on the 11th of October this year.
The High-Level occasion is a side event of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – World Bank (WB) Annual Meeting that is also set in Bali this October. It seeks to accomplish the ASEAN’s ambition in achieving its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The President is convening with the leaders of the ten ASEAN Member Countries to boost the solid partnership within the community and to manage the region’s economic growth that aims to foster development and equality.
The ASEAN Leaders’ Gathering also acts as a platform for further engagement not only among ASEAN Leaders but also with the key executives from the IMF, WB, and the United Nations (UN) as well, where they can exchange ideas on issues pertaining to building synergy in strengthening financial stability in the region, accelerating economic development and regional integration, and exploring potential collaboration to achieve development goals.
Furthermore, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is also making arrangements for President Duterte to attend a bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo as it would serve as an opportunity for the Chief Executive to personally extend his sympathies and support to the victims affected by the earthquake and tsunami that hit areas in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Philippines’ financial assistance to Indonesia will be coursed through the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Center).
