President Rodrigo Roa Duterte met with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc of Vietnam on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders’ Gathering at the Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort in Bali, Indonesia.

Aside from tackling issues on national defense, security, trade, economy, education, and energy, among others, the two leaders particularly stressed on enhanced cooperation in maritime affairs. Both have agreed on peacefully resolving disputes through international law that included the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Before their meeting ended, President Duterte expressed the Philippine government’s continued support to Vietnam and conveyed his hopes to advance the two countries’ strategic partnership.
