President Rodrigo Roa Duterte visited the five wounded-in-action (WIA) personnel of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) and one soldier at Camp Evangelista Station Hospital of the Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Division (4ID) in Patag, Cagayan de Oro City.
The wounded PSG personnel are Sgt. Jesus Garcia, Cpl. Ron Edward de Leon, Cpl. Rodel Genova, Cpl. Vincent Paniza, and Pfc. James Gonzales. Joining them in the same ward is Ssg. Eufrecino Payumo Jr. of the Philippine Army.
During his visit, President Duterte conferred the Wounded Personnel Medal and gave an initial assistance of Php 100,000 worth of check and Php 10,000 to each of the WIA PSG and soldier.
Cpl. Paniza, Pfc. Gonzales, Cpl. De Leon, and Ssg. Payumo suffered shrapnel wounds while Sgt. Garcia and Cpl. Genova had abrasions. The five PSG men were wounded after being ambushed by unknown perpetrators with an improvised explosive device (IED) at Barangay Matampay in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur on November 29, 2016. The team was conducting security operations for the President’s engagement and was traversing the national highway from Iligan City when the incident happened.
After visiting the WIA security aides and soldier at the camp, the President proceeded to Polymedic Medical Plaza in Cagayan de Oro City to personally check the other WIA troopers admitted there.
