Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City
14 June 2016
President Benigno S. Aquino III visited the prison cell of his late father, Senator Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino, Jr., at the Legaspi Compound in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.
The President examined the cell, Building No. 2, where books and other personal things of his deceased father are still being kept. He recalled the bygone years of his father’s imprisonment while sauntering in the whole compound.
The late senator stayed in the prison cell for seven years after being arrested because of his opposition to the government of former President Ferdinand Marcos. He was on a solitary confinement with 24-hour duty guards posted outside, received weekly medical and dental check-ups, daily supply of newspapers, and occasional visits from his family members. It was in 1980 when he was released to undergo medical treatment in the United States of America after suffering a heart attack.
President Aquino toured around the Legaspi Compound with some members of the Intelligence and Security Group of the Philippine Army.
