Highlighting Japan’s important role in the Philippines’ transportation sector, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visits the Metro Manila Subway Project — the country’s first mass underground transport system — at its depot in Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela City on November 4, 2023.

According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Metro Manila Subway,  dubbed as the ‘Project of the Century’, is a 33.1-kilometer underground project that will have 17 stations connecting Valenzuela to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

With funding assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Metro Manila Subway is seen to reduce travel time end-to-end from 1 hour and 30 minutes to just 35 minutes once operational.
