On the last day of his visit to Sydney, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano addressed the members of the Filipino community in a town hall gathering at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in Australia.
In his speech, the Secretary highlighted some of the measures done by the government under the leadership of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to uplift the lives of the Filipinos.
He spoke of the ‘Build, Build, Build’ program that aims to modernize infrastructure in the Philippines through projects envisioned to yield robust economic growth. He also mentioned the DFA’s continuing efforts in opening more appointment slots for passport applications, including the establishment of additional consular offices worldwide.
According to Philippine Ambassador to Australia Minda Calaguian-Cruz, the total number of Filipinos residing in Australia accounts to over 240,000, making them the fifth largest ethnic community in the country. In the state of New South Wales alone, where Sydney is one of the cities, there are about 100,000 Filipinos who contribute largely to the economy of their respective communities.
Secretary Cayetano is the Special Representative of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – Australia Special Summit from March 17-18, 2018.
