Established in 1872, the Tokyo National Museum is the oldest museum in Tokyo and the largest art museum in Japan. At present, it houses a collection of art works and antiques from Japan and other Asian countries. The museum also conducts research and investigation concerning book collections, rubbings and photographs related to fine arts.

Just across the Tokyo Museum is the National Museum of Nature and Science that was established in 1877. It houses one of Japan’s richest history and most comprehensive museum in science, keeping a valuable collection of over 4 million specimens. It also serves as the central institute for research on natural history and the history of science and technology.
