The Rideau Canal is a 202- kilometer waterway that winds its way through the heart of city, from Kingston to Ottawa and connecting Lake Ontario with the Ottawa River.

It opened in 1832 as a precautionary measure in case Canada gets into war with the United States. Now, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic Site of Canada. Rideau Canal is a unique city landmark and a site for boaters, canoeists and kayakers. Both sides of the canal are perfect for picnics, walking, jogging, biking or roller-blading. In the winter, it becomes the world’s largest skating rink, stretching 7.8 kilometers.
