Officially opened on September 23, 1983 by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium was established in commemoration of the 70th birth anniversary of the late Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, the 28th Sultan of Brunei Darrusalam.

The stadium served as a venue for the 20th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 1999 and hosted notable matches of the Brunei National Football team especially during its glorious days in 1990s at the Malaysian League Cup. It is situated on a 70-acre site in Jalan Berakas and has a seating capacity of 30,000 including 110 royal seats, 550 VIP seats and 3,000 grand seats.

Aside from hosting various tournaments, the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium also serves as an outlet for healthy outdoor activities.
