Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III headed the Philippine delegation in attending the Side Event on Alcohol, NCDs (Non-Communicable Diseases) and Sustainable Development during the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Secretary Duque served as one of the UN Member States representatives who shared “experiences and best practices from countries around the world in implementing the Global Strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol and address their need for continued technical support and advocacy efforts to advance their actions.”

The Side Event provided a platform for nations to “share experiences, discuss the most recent data on alcohol-related harm and impact of harmful use on development, and present state-of-the-art interventions to counter this.” It also included the launching of SAFER – a new World Health Organization (WHO)-led initiative with key partners to reduce the harmful use of alcohol worldwide.

The Philippines served as one of the co-sponsors of the Side Event.
