“All I ask from you is that you do your best and that you do it fair and square,” said President Rodrigo Roa Duterte as he led the send-off ceremony for the Filipino athletes participating in the 18th Asian Games in a program in Malacañan Palace.

In his speech, the President gave his assurance to the Philippine delegation that the government will support the development of the Filipino athletes and intensify its commitment towards sports excellence, global competitiveness, and the greater glory of the Philippines.

He also wished the athletes good luck and urged them to bring pride to their families, communities, and the entire Filipino nation.

“Every victory you bring back home is shared by the entire nation. We pray for your well-being and hope that your successful trip — and also a safe return to the country,” he added.

In the course of the program, Chef de Mission and Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez handed to President Duterte a jacket of the official tracksuit of the Philippine team, which the President wore.

Around 279 Filipino athletes are expected to compete and bring a better medal performance for the Philippines in the multi-sport competition.
