President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, together with the officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Department of National Defense (DND), met some Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) – Maute Group surrenderers in Marawi City.
A total of 27 members of the ISIS-Maute Group surrendered to the authorities. They were provided scholarship grants, and livelihood and cash assistance to start their life anew.
President Duterte also inspected a display of 2,649 loose firearms that were surrendered by civilians to the military and police through the facilitation of local authorities from Lanao Del Sur and Lanao Del Norte.
Prior to this, President Duterte met with the surrenderers in a private meeting, where he made a commitment to help them by allocating funds to distribute land properties to the Maranaos, as well as to provide them the capability to start their own business.
Moreover, the surrenderers are set to visit the Chief Executive in Malacañang after the Barangay and SK elections on May 14. This is an opportunity provided by President Duterte for them to air their grievances in an aim to achieve peace.
