Marking his second day in office, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte graced the Assumption of Command ceremony of the Philippine National Police (PNP), with Police Chief Superintendent and now Police Director General Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa as its new chief.
“I had the fortunate chance of having good military and police officers,” said President Duterte in his speech, referring to the members of Davao City’s armed units during his mayoral stint.
According to President Duterte, he chooses individuals whom he has worked closely with, like Police Director General Dela Rosa, when he selects key law enforcement officials under his administration.
He added that as promised during his presidential campaign, he would raise the salaries of the PNP and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) personnel and give them the weapons needed in fighting criminality.
The new Chief Executive strongly made his stance to combat illegal activities in the country and he called on police officials “tainted with corruption and drugs” to file their resignation as he will impose zero tolerance for abuses committed by them.
“I will not run this country with a corrupt police, mag-aaway tayo niyan… Do your duty, I will die for you,” the President said as he closed his speech.
