The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-India Commemorative Summit Plenary Session formally began as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his welcome remarks at the Taj Diplomatic Enclave in New Delhi, followed by the message of his Summit co-chair, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to the 10 ASEAN leaders and said that it is India’s privilege to host them.

“Your collective presence in India has touched hearts of my 1.25 billion fellow Indians. Since 1992, our partnership has evolved. We have made success in implementing objective of ASEAN-India partisanship for peace, progress and shared prosperity through five-year plan of action,” said the Prime Minister.

The Indian leader added that India shares the ASEAN vision for rule-based societies and values for peace, and that his country is committed to work with ASEAN Member States in enriching the partnership in the maritime domain.

The ASEAN leaders, including President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, and Prime Minister Modi adopted the Delhi Declaration before the closing of the session.

The theme for the Summit is ‘Shared Values, Common Destiny.’
