Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano visits New York in the United States of America to participate in the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN Headquarters from September 24-30, 2018.
For the second consecutive year, Secretary Cayetano represents the Government of the Philippines and shall address the High-Level General Debate that carries the theme, “Making the United Nations Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies.”
The Foreign Affairs Secretary is also scheduled to attend the “Road to Marrakech”, a high-level side event during the UNGA. The event provides an “opportunity for governments to highlight initiatives already in place, as well as the types of actions, partnerships and innovative ideas they foresee in the coming years as means of implementing the ‘Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration’, the first global agreement designed to better manage international migration in all its dimensions, for the benefit of all States and communities, and with the rights of all migrants at the fore.” The Global Compact shall be adopted in a gathering of the UN Member States in Marrakech, Morocco on December 10-11, 2018.
While in New York, Secretary Cayetano shall hold several bilateral meetings with his fellow foreign ministers from the Member States of the United Nations and other U.N. officials.
The Philippines is one of the first countries to sign the United Nations Declaration that formed the basis of the U.N. Charter. It officially became a Member State on October 24, 1945.
