The New York Public Library’s flagship building has become known as the People’s Palace since its opening in 1911. The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building is recognized as one of the world’s greatest public libraries. It holds a vast collection of more than 15 million items, from the first words ever carved into stone to Columbus’s letter announcing his New World discovery, to rare books and precious manuscripts.
The iconic Library Lions in the Fifth Avenue entrance are most widely known as Patience and Fortitude.
