Secretary Robert Borje of the Climate Change Commission (CCC) met Egypt Ambassador Mohamed Ibrahim Nasr at the sidelines of the 56th Session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB 56) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the World Convention Center in Bonn, Germany on June 13, 2022.
Egypt will hold the Presidency of the 27th Conference of Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh in November 6-18, 2022.
Ambassador Nasr commended the Philippines for its commitment to pushing the climate agenda, particularly for the developing world and climate vulnerable nations with highest representation in SB56.
The COP27 Presidency-designate welcomed the Philippines’ continued active role and work on the agenda inclusive of socio-economic dimensions, towards just and timely transformations as well as results-oriented agenda particularly on loss and damages and climate finance.
For the upcoming COP27, both officials underscored the need to greater cooperation and coordination between all stakeholders to focus on implementation, with COP27 becoming results-oriented in order to benefit the least responsible, with the least resources, most at risk and most vulnerable nations.
Secretary Borje stated that that the Philippines will work closely and be deeply engaged with the COP27 Presidency and all other states and stakeholders such as civil society, towards a results-oriented COP based on the principle of climate justice.
Secretary Borje led the Philippines’ participation to the SB56 together with Deputy Head of Delegation, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Undersecretary Mercedita Sombilla, and representatives from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
SB56 is the lead up to the 27th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which is scheduled on November 6 to 18, 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
