Climate Change Commission (CCC) Secretary Robert Borje met Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa of the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the sidelines of the UNFCCC’s 56th Session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB 56) at the World Conference Center in Bonn, Germany on June 14, 2022.

Secretary Borje recognized the leadership of Executive Secretary Espinosa in promoting multilateralism and in accelerating transformation in communities in her stint as UNFCCC Executive Secretary since 2016.

Both officials emphasized the importance of climate finance as a major element of climate justice, which must be delivered urgently and can be accessed easily in view of compounding societal issues and worsening climate problems.

Executive Secretary Espinosa expressed her willingness to continue working with key stakeholders such as the Philippines towards producing results for the global community. According to Espinosa, the focus at this point is to call the attention of the global community that “there is no more time for debate, and it is now time to implement.”

Secretary Borje led the Philippines’ participation to the SB56 together with Deputy Head of Delegation, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Undersecretary Mercedita Sombilla, and representatives from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

SB56 is the lead up to the 27th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the UNFCCC, which is scheduled on November 6 to 18, 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
