President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, together with Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez and Senator Lawrence Christopher ‘Bong’ Go (Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports), handed over cash incentives to the country’s champion athletes in a ceremony held at the Malacañang Golf (MALAGO) Clubhouse in Malacañang, Manila.
Five (5) national athletes who competed this year and won in various sports championships worldwide were given recognition and cash incentives from the PSC and the President. They comprised the following:
Hidilyn F. Diaz, bronze medalist at the 2019 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships held in Pattaya, Thailand and silver medalist at the 2019 Asian Weightlifting Championships held in Ningbo, China received PhP 350,000 from the PSC and PhP 500,000 from the President.
Eumir Felix Marcial, silver medalist at the 2019 Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur (AIBA) World Men’s Boxing Championships held in Yekaterinburg, Russia received PhP 500,000 from the PSC and PhP 500,000 from the President.
Nesthy A. Petecio, gold medalist at the 2019 AIBA World Women’s Championships held in Yekaterinburg, Russia received PhP 1 million from the PSC and PhP 1 million from the President.
Ernest John Obiena, gold medalist at the 23rd Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar and gold medalist at the 2019 30th Summer Universiade held in Napoli, Italy received PhP 1,650,000 from the PSC and PhP 1 million from the President. Obiena also qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Carlos Edriel P. Yulo, gold medalist at the 49th Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) Artistic Gymnastics World Championships held in Stuttgart, Germany received PhP 1 million from the PSC and PhP 1 million from the President. He also qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The five athletes, accompanied by their coaches and parents, also posed for their respective family photo with President Duterte.
