President Benigno S. Aquino III expressed his optimism that the Philippines will continue the road to success as he graced the event dubbed “Daang Matuwid: 2 Be Continued” held at the Club Filipino in San Juan City.
In his speech, President Aquino mentioned a number of his administration’s accomplishments after instituting various reforms and initiatives under his Daang Matuwid advocacy for the past five years. In Apayao province, for example, classrooms were renovated for the convenience of the students, and roads were constructed in some secluded parts of the province.
“Alam niyo ang matinding political will na ipinamalas natin upang maipasa ang mga batas tulad ng Responsible Parenthood, Sin Tax, at K to 12. Alam niyo kung paano natin napalawak ang sakop ng PhilHealth at Pantawid Pamilya. Kung paano tayo bumangon mula pagiging ‘Sick Man of Asia’ patungong ‘Asia’s Brightest Spot’,” the President said.
With the Philippines’ continuing success, President Aquino looked back on some individuals who sacrificed themselves for the country. Among them were his father — the late Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. — as well as Mar Roxas’ father, the late Senator Gerardo Manuel Roxas, Sr., who both fought for the nation’s independence and human rights; the late Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo, who prioritized the welfare of his fellowmen; former DILG Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, who sacrificed for the sake of the coalition’s unity; and Congresswoman Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo, who chose to serve Camarines Sur despite being a single mother.
“Bayan bago ang sarili: Yan ang tatak ng Liberal Party,” the President stressed.
