President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. lauded the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for successfully minting the first-ever colored coins featured in the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood (APIN) Commemorative Coin Set during the unveiling program at the Ceremonial Hall in Malacañan Palace.

“The establishment of a formal currency by any country is part of the definition of being a sovereign nation… We are using the most modern technology, which also signifies that the Philippines is at that stage in its development where we are at the forefront and will use the best technologies, the best techniques that are good and new for our country,” he said in his remarks, calling the minted coins a testament to BSP’s labor of love.

“It also reminds us how far we have come and the significance of what we have achieved in 125 years,” the President added.

BSP Governor and Chairman of the Monetary Board Felipe Medalla unveiled the 125th APIN Commemorative Coin Set that uses the latest digital printing technology featuring the first colored, non-circulation commemorative coins produced by the BSP.

The BSP-issued coin set is composed of 100-piso, 20-piso and 5-piso denominations commemorating the 1898 Declaration of Philippine Independence, the birth of the country’s First Republic at the Barasoain Church, and the bravery of Filipinos who fought for the country’s sovereignty in the Philippine-American War.

With this year’s theme, ‘Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan,’ the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood aims to focus on the freedom that our forebearers struggled for, the future they envisioned for the country, and the history that we seek to remember and honor, according to Administrative Order No. 8, series 2023 signed by the Chief Executive.
