A national heritage site in Brunei Darussalam, Kampong Ayer is the largest water village in the world with approximately 30,000 residents. This prehistoric village, estimated to be over 1,000 years old or so, comprises of small villages linked together by footbridges or plank walkways and has structures like mosques, shops, houses, schools, restaurants, and hospitals.
Residents and tourists transport to and fro the well-preserved Kampong Ayer and the mainland through water taxis or speedboats for BN$5.00 per person.
