At 251 miles (360 kilometers) in length, the Jordan River is a major river flowing into the Dead Sea and is relatively the lowest elevation of any river in the world.

The river also played a significant role in Christian history culminating with the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.

Despite the rediscovery of the “Bethany Beyond Jordan” (Christ’s baptismal site) inside the Jordan territory, the influx of tourists remain a challenge and in stark comparison to Israel’s that shares half of the river’s territory in the west bank, and which enjoys a high concentration on biblical tourism.
