President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Indonesian President Joko Widodo signed a joint declaration of cooperation ensuring maritime security before giving their joint press statement at the Credentials Hall of Istana Merdeka.

In his remarks, President Duterte thanked the Indonesian people for their warm welcome and said that his meeting with President Widodo has been very productive. With the joint declaration they signed, the governments of the Philippines and Indonesia will take all necessary steps to ensure the security in the Sulu and Sulawesi Seas.

He expressed his appreciation on Indonesia’s support as the Philippines moves forward to its peace process in the island of Mindanao. He has also discussed with the Indonesian leader about air and sea connectivity, and measures to enhance people-to-people exchanges between their countries.

The trade of illegal drugs was part of the meeting’s agenda and the two leaders have agreed to seek for ways that will intensify their cooperation against illegal drugs.

“We will do our part in contributing to the aim of a drug-free ASEAN community,” said President Duterte.
