It was built it 1988 on a 20-acre site some four kilometers away the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan. The mosque was officially launched in 1994 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Sultan of Brunei’s reign.
Jame’‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is the largest of its kind in Brunei and is said to accommodate up to 4,000 worshippers. Locally known as the Kiarong Mosque, it has a total of 29 gold-plated domes symbolizing the 29th Sultan of Brunei Darussalam in the person of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
The sacred building has been considered as a great work of architecture, following the structure of Turkish mosques with four tall minarets or towers overlooking the golden domes. It can also be seen from downtown Gadong and by those who pass through the highway going to Bandar Seri Begawan.
