Asmad Hiya has been residing in Lao People’s Democratic Republic for sixteen years now. He was previously based in Malaysia and worked as a civil engineer for a Japanese company. He first went to Laos upon being assigned a project that was supposed to last for a few months, but he came to love the country and decided to stay in Laos for good.

Aside from operating his own guest house and restaurant, he also has a shop selling Laotian women clothing.

In 2010, he volunteered to campaign in Laos and Cambodia for the candidacy of then Senator and now President Benigno S. Aquino III.

He is married to a Laotian wife and has three children.
