May 17, 2022
Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs Sarah Lou Arriola participated in the first Round Table of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) 2022 at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York.
The IMRF served as a platform for UN Member States to discuss and share progress on the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (also known as Global Compact for Migration or GCM) — an intergovernmentally negotiated UN agreement on managing international migration.
Discussions on the first Round Table focused under the theme, ‘Ensuring that migration is voluntary, orderly and regular’.
The Philippines, being among the pilot or ‘Champion’ countries of the GCM, lobbied for the inclusion of decent work and fair and ethical recruitment provisions, as inspired by Target 8.8 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The country’s effort was successful as ‘decent work and fair and ethical recruitment provisions’ were codified as Objective 6 of the GCM.
