President Rodrigo Roa Duterte led the inspection of the ongoing construction of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) Hospital in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga as the nation celebrated Labor Day.
Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III, Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Director Gerardo Legaspi, and OFW Hospital Administrator Dr. Jose Dante Dator conducted the briefing for the President during the inspection.
In his speech, President Duterte said that the construction of the OFW Hospital is “the government’s way of thanking our OFWs for their valuable contributions to our country’s socioeconomic progress and for their critical role in upholding the Filipino identity in the global community.”
The OFW Hospital is being constructed on a 1.5-hectare property donated by the Provincial Government of Pampanga. Its 100-bed capacity is expected to serve OFWs and their legal dependents once fully operational by the end of June 2022. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) also donated PhP250 million for the procurement of hospital equipment.
The Chief Executive expressed his appreciation to the OFWs, saying that “their unwavering dedication and perseverance as well as their sacrifices to provide for their families make them worthy to be called mga bagong bayani (new heroes).”
Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III, Senator Christopher Lawrence ‘Bong’ Go, Bloomberry Resorts Corporation Vice Chairman Donato Almeda and other key government officials also attended the event.
