Following his activity in Tacloban City, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte visited the Municipality of Palo for the inauguration of the new Leyte Provincial Capitol held at the New Leyte Provincial Government Complex (NLPGC) in Palo, Leyte.
President Duterte unveiled the project marker of the new government structure together with Leyte Governor and Leyte Provincial Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) Chairperson Leopoldo Dominico Petilla.
Situated along the Palo West Bypass Road, the new Leyte Provincial Capitol provides convenient and efficient access to the provincial government’s services by housing all its departments and offices within one centralized and modern facility.
The old Capitol Building in Tacloban City, built in 1917, used to be the seat of the Commonwealth Government of the Philippines when President Sergio Osmeña assumed office in 1944.
The plan to relocate the provincial government to Palo came after the old building sustained cracks in the aftermath of a magnitude 6.5 earthquake that hit Leyte and Samar in 2019. The structure also suffered from storm surge when Super Typhoon Yolanda wreaked havoc in 2013.
During the program, the Chief Executive also led the partial turnover of completed housing units located at the Peace and Prosperity Village in San Isidro, Leyte and the distribution of Certificates of Land Ownership Awards (CLOA) to representatives of the Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs).
