President Benigno S. Aquino III led the inaugural drive-through of the newly-completed and expanded Yawa Bridge at Legazpi City, Albay.
According to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the improvement and expansion project of the bridge has an estimated budget allocation of PhP 90 million which entails upgrading of the formerly two-lane bridge into a four-lane highway. This widening plan is expected to facilitate the transport of goods and ease traffic congestion between the city proper and urban barangays in the north, to the five municipalities of the first district of Albay and Tobaco City.
Furthermore, the development of the Yawa Bridge is projected to boost the tourism industry of the country as the bridge improves the transportation system of Legazpi City. According to its local government, the city is dubbed as the “City of Fun and Adventure” in the global travel market with 32 percent yearly average increase in tourist arrivals since the year 2012.
Yawa Bridge connects Maharlika Highway in the barangays of Bonot and Rawis, and the Tibu Pumping Station located in Barangay San Roque.
