“I fully support projects and other activities that promote the welfare and the holistic development of our unsung heroes who will always play a crucial part in our country’s development,” said President Rodrigo Roa Duterte as he led the ceremonial groundbreaking of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) Center in Las Piñas City.
Designed to be a one-stop shop for migrant workers, the OFW Center is a 10-storey building that will house satellite offices of government agencies for the documentation and travel needs of the OFWs.
President Duterte delivered a stern warning to fellow government workers to lessen the burden of OFWs by hastening the delivery of services and cutting bureaucratic red tape in government offices.
He likewise expressed his hopes for the establishment of more OFW Centers in major cities in order to provide a more accessible and convenient option for more OFWs residing outside Las Piñas City.
“Sana malagay ito sa mga major cities para hindi na magbiyahe ang mga ano natin. I hope that my classmate, si Dabs, would be able to improve on all aspects of whatever concerns there are in the life of a migrant worker,” said the President.
The Chief Executive hailed the Filipino migrant workers as “bagong bayani” and said that he is “profoundly moved by their unwavering dedication, perseverance and their day-to-day sacrifices.”
“In recognition of their service and heroism, this Administration has remained steadfast in providing the best service it could give to our OFWs,” he added, reiterating that he wants government offices to ease the lives of migrant workers, and ensured that it will continue to protect their rights and welfare.
“Let us therefore continue to revitalize our sense of duty and patriotism as we collectively endeavor to uphold and protect the welfare of all Filipinos, wherever they are in this planet,” President Duterte ended.
The OFW Center is a project of the Global Filipino Movement (GFM) Foundation, Inc., a non-stock and non-profit organization that works with Christian churches, organizations and individuals to provide free assistance to overseas workers.
