After the inspection of the Puerto Princesa Airport Development Project (PPADP), President Benigno S. Aquino III headed to Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu to lead the groundbreaking ceremony of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) New Passenger Terminal Building.
In his speech, President Aquino said that this kind of project is part of the administration’s vision to give quality service to the people. “Lagi po nating binabanggit: sa tuwid na daan, ang hangad natin, inclusive growth. Ibig-sabihin po nito, isinusulong natin ang pag-angat, hindi ng iilan, kundi ng lahat,” he added.
President Aquino stated that among the facilities that will be constructed in the New Passenger Terminal Building were parking stands for 13 buses and 550 private vehicles, as well as for the 20 aircrafts with an individual aerobridge. A link-bridge that will connect the domestic and international terminals will also be built. And from the 49 check-in counters, an additional 100 counters will be made available.
“Dahil sa mga ito, inaasahan nating tataas ang annual passenger capacity ng paliparan, o ang bilang ng mga naa-accommodate nitong pasahero kada taon — mula 4.5 million, patungong 15 million,” the President said.
He also expressed his gratitude to the individuals and organizations, including the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), Department of Tourism (DOT), local government of Cebu, and the GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) who worked hand-in-hand for this Php17.52 billion project which is targeted for completion in 2018. “Tunay pong sagisag ang araw na ito sa tagumpay na dulot ng pagkakapit-kamay; patunay din ito sa napipitas na nating bunga sa ilalim ng ating Public-Private Partnerships,” he added.
After the groundbreaking ceremony, President Aquino, together with GMCAC President Manuel Louie Ferrer, GMCAC Chief Technical Advisor Andrew Acquaah-Harrison, and Cabinet members inspected some of the facilities and newly-renovated areas of the MCIA Terminal 1.
