Today marks a milestone in the 20-year diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Armenia as the two countries agreed to strengthen their ties during a courtesy call of Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian to President Benigno S. Aquino III.
Minister Nalbandian was impressed by President Aquino’s determination to transform the country and by his hands-on governance. During the meeting, President Aquino brought up the possibility of exporting bananas to Armenia as the Philippines is diversifying its markets for its bananas and other tropical fruit exports, and they have agreed to assess the possible shipment cost.
According to Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for European Affairs Elizabeth Buensuceso, the Philippines and Armenia can share experiences about their respective diasporas, learn from each other and exchange strategies on how Filipino and Armenian overseas workers can help in the economic and political development of their respective countries. She also said that various agreements have been signed by Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario and Minister Nalbandian. These are the agreements on double taxation, protection of investments, science and technology, and culture. Three more agreements are coming according to President Aquino who has been invited by Minister Nalbandian for a visit to Armenia.
