Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu
April 3, 2017
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), in association with the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF), held a debate on the topic: “Is Asia bound to follow the advanced economies’ new mediocre?” at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
The debate discussed the strong near-term outlook for Asia of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the market’s downside risks, including the possible implications of the “new mediocre” in advanced economies — an extended phase of relatively low growth.
The speakers also elaborated on whether Asia’s strengths can withstand the impact of weak external demand, spillovers from advanced economies’ unconventional monetary policies, and exchange rate pressures.
BSP Governor Amando Tetangco, Jr. was present in the event and was accompanied by BSP Monetary Board Member Felipe Medalla, London School of Economics and Political Science Emeritus Professor Lord Meghnad Desai, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy Professor Danny Quah, former Governor of the Bank of Thailand Tarisa Watanagase, BBC World News Singapore Anchor Rico Hizon and other BSP officials.
