On the third day of the 35th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte met with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

In their bilateral meeting, both leaders discussed the partnership projects between the two countries, especially the infrastructure projects in the Philippines. President Duterte expressed the country’s appreciation for the opening of the Philippine Consulate General in Nagoya, Japan. He also conveyed his sympathies for the number of casualties after the onslaught of Typhoon Hagibis, and his sadness on the destruction brought about by a fire that engulfed Shuri Castle – one of the oldest castles in Japan.

In response, Prime Minister Abe expressed his appreciation to the Philippine President for his attendance during the enthronement of the new emperor that the Japanese people considered as an extremely important occasion.
