President Benigno S. Aquino III led the awarding rites to recognize the brave soldiers who fought during the Zamboanga siege that lasted for three weeks. The occasion was held after the flag raising ceremony at the Armed Forces of the Philippines General Headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
A total of 18 soldiers were awarded with medals to honor their exemplary and courageous acts during the conflict between the government troops and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). In his speech, President Aquino commended the Philippine military, as well as the police force, for performing beyond the call of duty. He thanked them for ensuring the safety of all the Zamboangeños until the standoff was finished.
“Habambuhay pong babantayog ang inyong dedikasyon at propesyunalismo sa kasaysayan; magsisilbi kayong huwaran di lamang ng kasalukuyang henerasyon, kundi maging ng susunod na salinlahi,” he said.
Moreover, now that the conflict is over, the President assured that Zamboanga City will continue to receive support from the government to aid their rehabilitation. He guaranteed that food, water and health services will be provided to affected communities until they fully recover.
“Ibabangon natin ang Zamboanga mula sa nagdaang trahedya, at magkasama nating itataguyod ang kapayapaan sa kalakhang bansa,” President Aquino said.
