President Rodrigo Roa Duterte graced the 9th anniversary of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) as well as the 25th anniversary of the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City.

MinDA, formerly known as the Mindanao Economic Development or MEDCo, was created in March 19, 1992 to promote, coordinate, and facilitate the active and extensive participation of all sectors affecting the socio-economic development of Mindanao.

On the other hand, the BIMP-EAGA is a sub-regional economic cooperation in Southeast Asia composed of four (4) Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Member States — Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It was established to spur economic growth in the underdeveloped and geographically remote areas in these four countries.

The BIMP-EAGA was initially grouped into four strategic pillars — Food Basket, Connectivity, Tourism and Environment — with the eventual creation of a fifth pillar in 2015, the Socio-Cultural and Education.

This year’s celebration centered on the theme, ‘MinDA@9: In the Pursuit of Whole of Mindanao & Palawan Approach through the Du30: Mindanao 2030 Development Framework.’

In his keynote address, President Duterte expressed his gratitude to the MinDA for its continuing success in building a stronger and more progressive Mindanao region.

“May this occasion foster stronger economic cooperation that will lead to the creation of more viable opportunities in trade and investment, transportation, agri-business, tourism, energy, and environmental protection and management, among others, not only in the region but in the entire BIMP-EAGA corridor as well,“ the President said.

“Together, let us pursue more progressive and inclusive strategies for growth in the region as work towards the advancement of every Mindanaoan,” the Chief Executive ended.
