President Rodrigo Roa Duterte joined in the celebration as Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa celebrated his 55th birthday in a simple gathering held at the Multi-Purpose Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

Attended by his family members, friends and subordinates, the PNP Chief said he has nothing more to ask from God in terms of his career and family. However, he urged his subordinates to redeem the good name of the Philippine National Police, whose image had been besmirched by a sensational crime involving men of the same uniform under him.

“Eto po ang pinakamatamis na birthday, yet the most challenging birthday for me… isang napaka sensational crime na ginawa po dito sa loob ng ating kampo… I wish, I hope and I pray na tayong lahat sa PNP we have had enough reasons learned, we have had enough heartaches, we have had enough galit, inis kung bakit nangyayari ito sa atin, sana po i-convert natin yan into actions. We should be responsible for our men, hindi pwedeng pabayaan ang mga masasamang police na gumawa po ng further damage sa ating organization, as I have said PNP first before self, bago natin isipin ang sarili natin, isipin muna natin kung ano ang ikabubuti sa ating organisasyon,” said the PNP Chief.

In his message, President Duterte expressed his trust and confidence to PNP Chief Ronald Dela Rosa amid the controversy surrounding the agency. “If ipatanggal si ‘Bato,’ pati si Speaker at ako wala dito,” the President said. This comes following the recent kidnapping of a Korean national who had been killed inside the Camp Crame by police officers.

He added that he would not tolerate, above all, drug smuggling and gun-for-hire-kidnappings that involve police officers, of which he considers a form of treason against the country. He also urged police generals to have the moral ascendancy needed for those in the lower ranks to follow. Similarly, he advised police officers in the lower ranks to seek his help in Malacañang if faced with monetary problems instead of doing illegal work.

On the inauguration of United States of America President Donald Trump, where he revealed he had phoned the U.S.A. President to congratulate him, he said he had found an instant rapport with President Trump whom he shares affinity with and who also enforces a stern anti-drug campaign.

In closing, the President announced that there would be additional monetary benefits to police officers this year and a monthly incremental salary increase that would double their salary by the end of 2017. He likewise said that he plans to do the same salary increase to government teachers.
