President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. convened with his fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders for the 40th ASEAN Summit Plenary Session in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia, this year’s ASEAN Chair, cited that the Summit is an avenue to discuss key issues that the Region currently experiences in order to build “peaceful, prosperous and harmonious communities”.
Emphasizing agriculture as a priority for the Philippines, President Marcos Jr. called on the ASEAN Community to enhance food security cooperation to solidify food resilience and promote food self-sufficiency by embracing agricultural transformation in the Region to shield ASEAN nations from unexpected challenges in the global food value chain.
He also urged his fellow ASEAN Members to reinvigorate economies in unison and stand by this year’s theme of ‘Addressing Challenges Together’ through tourism recovery, energy cooperation, and revitalized trade and investments, among others.
The Chief Executive believes in the significance of face-to-face Summits as the Region gears towards ‘Addressing Challenges Together’ even after being disrupted in the past two (2) years by the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
