Manila Memorial Park, Parañaque City

Thirty-one years after the assassination of a Filipino icon and an opposition leader, President Benigno S. Aquino III attended a holy mass in commemoration of his father, former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino’s martyrdom.

At the emergence of Martial Law, Senator Aquino along with other nonconformists were imprisoned for seven years. He was then permitted to travel to the United States for medication following a heart attack. When he returned on 21 August 1983, he was shot in the head while being escorted outside an aircraft at the Manila International Airport.

After his death, his legacy continued when his wife, the late Corazon Aquino participated in the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, ran for presidency and ended the dictatorship.

Joining the President were the rest of the Aquino family, close friends and members of the Cabinet.
