President Rodrigo Roa Duterte joined his fellow Leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for the 18th ASEAN-India Summit via virtual convention.

Anchored on the discussion to strengthen partnership between India and the regional bloc, the ASEAN Leaders and Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirmed the further improvement of nations in several areas of cooperation including regional stability, trade and investment growth, multilateralism, environmental protection, and freedom of navigation, among others.

The Leaders recognized the vital assistance of India in the region’s efforts to combat the effects of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis. During the onset of the pandemic, India has donated supplies of vaccines and medical equipment, as well as donated US$1 million to the ASEAN COVID-19 Response Fund. They vowed to work together to enhance capabilities and preparedness of each country for future public health emergencies.

Next year, ASEAN will commemorate its 30th anniversary of dialogue relations with India. As such, the Leaders asserted their commitment to continue working hand-in-hand with the country in order to achieve mutual gains and development.
