President Benigno S. Aquino III participated in the 17th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-Japan Summit as the opening day of the 25th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits continued at the Myanmar International Convention Center (MICC).
The Philippine leader joined his fellow ASEAN Heads of State/Government and the ASEAN Secretary General in welcoming Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The summit saw the ASEAN leaders expressing their appreciation with the development of the ASEAN-Japan dialogue relations and encouraged the promotion of trade and tourism through the ASEAN-Japan Centre, as well as an increase of trade relations between ASEAN member countries and Japan to fully implement the ASEAN-Japan Free Trade Area.
The leaders also tackled the implementation of the Vision Statement and the Plan of Action on the ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation that were adopted during the 40th Anniversary of the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit and the promotion of ASEAN-Japan cooperation in disaster management and cooperation.
They also congratulated Japan for convening the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction that will be held in Sendai on March 2015.
