President Benigno S. Aquino III and his counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held the 13th ASEAN-India Summit on the first day of the 27th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

In his opening remarks, this year’s ASEAN Chairperson and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak conveyed his warmest welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi of the Republic of India for attending the Summit. He noted the great partnership in various areas of cooperation between the two that started in 1992, stating the successful implementation of several activities and programmes outlined in the Plan of Action 2010-2015.

“I am pleased to note that our good efforts will continue with the adoption of the new Plan of Action for the period 2016-2020, that places greater emphasis on engagement and participation of the peoples of India and ASEAN,” Prime Minister Razak said.

He added that the establishment of India’s dedicated Mission to ASEAN in Jakarta, Indonesia this year would ensure an effective coordination between India and the 10 ASEAN Member States, as well as with the ASEAN Secretariat, in monitoring the implementation of various activities and programmes under the ASEAN-India cooperation.
