President and Commander-in-Chief Rodrigo Roa Duterte led the 121st Founding Anniversary of the Philippine Army (PA), carrying this year’s theme, ‘Serving the People, Securing the Land,’ at the PA Headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.
In his speech, President Duterte recognized the PA’s important contribution in combatting terrorism by successfully liberating the Islamic City of Marawi from the Maute group, and in fostering an environment of peace and stability amidst the possible resurgence of these terrorist groups.
“As your Commander-in-Chief, you have made me proud and you continue to do so by your induction to the Palladium Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame for being the beacon of governance. My salute to you my beloved soldiers,” he said.
According to the President, he has released PhP 500 million to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to be used for medical interventions for those who need it and an additional PhP 50 million, which will be provided monthly, allocated for its retirees.
He also discussed the plan to form a mini-GSIS that would house the military welfare fund, which would solely cater to the AFP and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Moreover, the President said he has also allocated an additional PhP 50 million for the refurbishment of the AFP’s oldest building.
Among the highlights of the event was the conferment ceremony by the Commander-in-Chief to the PA’s outstanding personnel and civilian employees that have excelled and contributed to its overall mission.
Joining the Commander-in-Chief onstage are Vice President Ma. Leonor ‘Leni’ Robredo, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Rey Leonardo Guerrero.
