President Rodrigo Roa Duterte honored the 117th anniversary of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in celebration of the PCG’s 117 years of rendered services of performing maritime operations, enacting maritime law enforcement, safeguarding life and property in sea, and protecting marine resources.

The celebration had the theme, ‘Coast Guard Advancement: Raising Standards Through Streamlined Infrastructure and Modernized Equipment for Enhanced Capabilities’, and was held at the PCG Headquarters in Port Area, Manila.

The Commander-in-Chief praised the PCG’s continued efforts in fulfilling its mandate and also noted that the achievement of its enlisted personnel have pushed for developments that are crucial in making the PCG more efficient and responsive to the challenges of the times and to the demands of the Filipino people.

“The fulfillment of your mandate to enforce maritime law, protect our environment and secure our maritime territories has contributed greatly in keeping our people safe from the dangers that may come at sea. I am glad that the reforms that we have instituted since 2016 are now bearing fruit,” President Duterte stated, further citing that the acquisition of new weapons, equipment and several multi-purpose response vessels and fast patrol boats have greatly contributed to the law enforcement capability of the PCG.

The PCG played a pivotal role in the victory of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) during the Marawi siege, as it cut the supply chain and prevented possible reinforcement units for the Maute terrorist group.

Likewise, President Duterte recognized the service of the PCG’s distinguished personnel, where he, together with Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade and PCG Commandant Admiral Elson Hermogino, led the presentation of awards to three (3) accomplished individuals and eight (8) PCG units for their outstanding public service.

He urged the awardees to sustain their dedication as protectors of the citizens and defenders of the land.

“May you remain committed in performing responsibilities as defenders of the land and protectors of our citizens. Please know that all your sacrifices are truly and greatly appreciated,” he said.

“Let us move and act further to empower the men and women of the Coast Guard and enhance the agency’s services to benefit the Filipino people,” the President ended.
