U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson meets with the foreign ministers of the Lower Mekong Countries—Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, Burma and Vietnam— for the 10th Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) Ministerial Meeting at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City on August 6, 2017.

In response to a meeting with then U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and foreign ministers of the Lower Mekong Countries, the LMI was created on July 23, 2009 to build an enhanced transnational cooperation in the areas of environment, education, infrastructure development and other common shared interests. It hopes to narrow the development gap among ASEAN member states.

Myanmar (formerly Burma) formally joined the initiative in July 2012.
