President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. underscored the significance of maritime security cooperation and the Region’s vital waterways in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – United States of America (USA) relations, as well as protection of marine resources in the Indo-Pacific as he delivered his intervention at the 10th ASEAN-US Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The President urged his fellow leaders to continue their engagement and capacity building programs for law enforcement agencies and personnel through the International Law Enforcement Academy and support the ongoing work of the Senior Officials’ Meeting on Transnational Crime + US (SOMTC + US).

He encouraged the US to use its global influence in helping ease the current global plight of rising fuel prices as well as its long-term support for the implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action on Energy Cooperation.

Likewise, President Marcos Jr. called on the US to support the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity in order to preserve the Region’s varied ecosystems and increase resilience against climate change impacts and natural disasters.
