President Benigno S. Aquino III formally turned over 500 housing units to Sendong survivors who are temporarily staying at the Tent City in Cagayan De Oro. One hundred twenty five quadruplex units were built in a relocation site in Calaanan Phase III through the joint efforts of DSWD, NHA, LGU and Habitat for Humanity Philippines. Around 4,700 houses in eight relocation sites are being built to accommodate al the survivors of typhoon Sendong who ravaged the city in December last year.

In his speech, President Aquino emphasized the readiness of the government in time of crisis and rehabilitation. This includes the 500-thousand peso standby funds for DSWD field offices, the launching of the DOST Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (flood warning system) program, livelihood projects via SEA-K and TESDA construction-related training on masonry, plumbing, welding and electrical installation wherein 600 residents from Cagayan De Oro and Iligan City are the initial program beneficiaries.

During the ceremonial distribution led by the President, ten (10) families received their Certificates of Award and Acceptance and claim stubs for a family kitchen set, food pack and starter kit amounting to P17,000. Ten (10) Self-Employment Assistance-Kaunlaran (SEA-K) groups from Cagayan De Oro City also received livelihood assistance from President Aquino with a total amount of P975,000.
